Sign-up for the We Call Them Pirates knitalong is now closed. If you already signed up (by commenting before January 15), but you’re not on the list, email me & I’ll look you up and resend your invite to join.

Welcome to the We Call Them Pirates Knitalong! (And/or: Pirate Mittens.) You may also make something of your own design, but it must use a Pirates chart from the We Call Them Pirates pattern for the motif. Both patterns (in both English and French, even!), including the charts are available free at Hello Yarn (or use the handy sidebar links, or you know, the ones above, duh).
I thought starting a KAL would light a fire under my ass to knit the hat I’ve been coveting for so long.
Sign up by January 15, complete the hat or mittens by March 15. My inclination was to say February 15, so it would still be cold; but I figured that would be too strict. Plus, I’m going to have a really busy February. So March it is!
For motivation beyond the satisfaction of a job well done, I’ll have a fabulous prize drawing from the finishers. Hurrah!
To join, just comment below & I’ll add you as a user (If you’re already a WordPress.com user, be sure to use the same email below to skip the registration step; if you’re not already a WordPress.com user, you’ll get a WordPress registration invite & registration will automatically add you as a contributor). Then you can post your plans, progress & finished objects. Ta da!
And here are some buttons. Can you tell who’s procrastinating?

I’m in! I have a big box of Knitpicks Telemark in assorted colors to choose from, that will be the hardest part.
I wish I knew how to add a button to my blog, I will use learning that as my procrastination technique.

I got your email Queenie, and did all the sign in stuff, but not sure if I need to do anything to get on the list on the sidebar or not. (or how to post to the blog when the time comes) Maybe I just need to wait for another email from wordpress. I’ll worry about it tomorrow.

Kelly Sue, I’d say as long as you’re not too far along, you’re good with the hat. Except that I want you to make the mittens, too, so you can walk me through any hard parts.
Carolyn–I just added you manually. I don’t know why the dumbo thing didn’t put you in automatically. Not sure if it was my fault or the nice machine’s. Either way, you’re in like Flynn.

Am lovin’ the skulls! (pirates?) Just sewed/quilted a Dia de los Muertos table runner which I gave as a Christmas gift and All Saints Day is my 2nd fav holiday after Halloween. Can’t wait to get started as it gives me an excuse to use the Heilo stash which is obviously not going to become a sweater anytime soon. : )

Ooooh, I’ve never joined a knitalong before, but the thought of making those as DOTD mittens is SO awesome – Maybe black for the background and go through stripes of those bright Mexican colors for the skulls – pink, yellow, red, aqua… Now I need to go read closer to see what I have to do in a KAL!

Okay, sure – I know when I’m licked! I just declared last night that, having failed to get correct size on my third attempt at the hat for my husband, I was abandoning the project until next winter.
And now you come along with a knitalong, which I find in Craftzine blog the very next morning? Obviously, someone out there wants me to knit this hat *now*!
So, count me in! I’ll finish frogging what I have on try #3, and cast on anew! If it goes well this time, I have been considering adapting the pattern to a pair of fingerless mitts for myself…

totalkyknitwit2007–if you’re kniting something other than the hat or mittens, you need to use the We Call Them Pirates chart itself, not just any pirate-themed pattern.
So you could make the baby sweater you’re talking about, but you’d need to use the We Call Them Pirates chart instead of the one from the original pattern. Make sense?
The idea is to have all of the finished objects use the exact same print, not just a similar theme. Gauge, yarn, color, garment–all that can change, but the print should be the exact same one.
Re-comment if you still want in!

I recently got a new cell phone and it has been screaming out for a nice little “sock” before it gets all scratched up. As I mulled the design in my head I considered ribbing, maybe some cabled celtic knotwork, and then I stumbled upon this knit along. The “We Call Them Pirates” chart is perfect to adorn my phone’s little protector. So if my project doesn’t seem to small or insignificant I would love to join this knit along. I may still eventually make the hat, but I am pretty buried with knitting my girlfriend this incredibly sexy skirt and finishing my kilt socks.

I would love to join this KAL. I am working on the mittens and am about to make a third attempt at getting gauge on #6 dpns. This is my first fair isle so I must be knitting way to tight. Anyway, I don’t have a blog, but I will sign up at flickr to post pics.

I would like to join! I have had this pattern sitting on the back of my mind for a bit. I bought the yarn for it a while ago and I have been too scared to jump in. Now I’ve got some cashmere for the hat lining and still have the yarn for the outside of the hat – so its time to just go for it! Thanks for setting this up!!

What a coinkydink. My nephew asked me last week for something with a skull on it as a reward for good marks, but I didn’t have a pattern. So I knitted a plain old striped scarf and put a skull and crossbones pin on it. Told him it was a pirate scarf! Sign me up, please.
